Opening Day Gem

02.07.15 - Marymount U., Barcroft Park, Arlington, VA: Setting a February 7th opening day was a little gutsy here in the mid-atlantic. But the risk paid off with really mild weather (for this time of year), & the second game of the doubleheader was gifted with this sunset over right field. It's good to be outside again.

Winter Blossom Garden Detail

I've been slow to post lately, but found time to do some morning wandering in the garden this Thanksgiving Holiday. It's nice to photograph some non-action, and especially nice here to still catch some winter crops blooming well into November. It's a side project of mine to shoot garden details. Here's my growing work in progress. And I'm building some nice peak-action coverage to hopefully post a solid Best-Of this year ... in the meantime here's some recent "micro" posts.

Bankers' Hours

I guess it's that time of year ... when the sky opens up unexpectedly and you just have to roll with the punches. But that makes it fun, & my school needed some rain-out stock anyway. Plus, I made it home before dark ... it was a good spring day.

My Best of 2010

This year I continued to attempt "off-peak" images to balance a sometimes overwhelming volume of game action. So I've filed my favorites chronologically & separated them into two groups.

Sports

These Sports images contain game-action shots, including a few from new attempts such as Crew and Water Polo, as well as the ever challenging (for me) Squash.

Editorial

This second group's focus is away from peak action. I've used the Editorial classification loosely, assembling images taken on & off field as well as some Commercial and Personal projects that I really like. Also this year, I began experimenting with Lightroom and there are a few enhanced examples here too.

It was an overall good year of challenging work that sent me all over the mid-atlantic and brought some new leads and adventures.

The Mecca of Christmas Lights

I had an assignment to capture some Holiday illumination this week, so I had to take a journey to 34th street in Hampden. Here are a few classic scenes from a classic street where miracles happen everyday. Happy Holidays!

Gone Crabbin' 8/28

I was invited to go crabbing Saturday. It was my first experience pulling crabs and I had a blast. I have a new found appreciation for the high level of labor involved in getting a bushel of crabs to my table. We spent a full day in the shallow waters of the Middle River and the Chesapeake near Miller's Island. We worked our tails off for a bushel of heavy crabs that we enjoyed well into the evening.

To the persuit of Happiness ...

And to toast some newly provided time (obviously) thanks to my new friend Eyjafjallajokul, I thought I'd revisit some relatively unseen pics from my fall 2008 trip to Southern Europe. Here are some images from the first cemetery of the City of Athens. Opened in 1837, it became a luxurious cemetery for famous Greek people and foreigners … and it helped put things into perspective for me.

I hope I can post some new images and adventures again soon.

Santorini Sunset

I've been nominated as a finalist by Canon's "Explorer's of Light" panel! My image "Santorini Sunset" has been selected to be exhibited in VisArts at Rockville’s Points of Departure exhibition opening February 19, 2010 at 6:30p. Come out to see some great photography!

The photograph was made November 1, 2008 on a cliffside trail hike on the Greek Island of Santorini. My wife and I were on our honeymoon backpacking through Europe. That day we were exploring a few different areas of the island by bus, taxi, then foot. We had decided to do a sparse trail between the towns of Ia and Thira at Sunset. Naturally I didn't give us enough time and we ended up hiking back mostly in dark. But we had a good adventure, a little precarious at times, and we met up with a cool little dog we named Jack who thought we were made of food. Fortunately, he had taken the route a couple times.

D700 & 17-35mm @ 26mm, ISO:1000 - 1/80th @ f/20 and slow breathing.
